  4. WFinger is a Finger & Whois Winsock complaint client. It has the following
  5. features:
  6.           Finger service;
  7.           Whois service;
  8.           DNS lookup;
  9.           Finger Address book;
  10.           History of finger queries;
  11.           Text search capability;
  12.           Copy output to clipboard;
  13.           Print output;
  14.           Save output to file.

  17. Installation:

  19. 1. Make a subdirectory for WFinger.
  20. 2. Unzip WFinger to subdirectory made in previous step.
  21. 3. Copy ctl3d.dll to Windows system directory (WINDOWS\SYSTEM)
  22.    There is a good chance that ctl3d.dll is already installed in
  23.    your system since nearly all modern software uses it. You can try to
  24.    skip this step. If the program doesn't work, follow the step.
  25. 4. Add WFinger.EXE to a chosen program group.

  28.                          Using WFinger
  29.  
  30. Finger Query:
  31.  
  32. Finger query starts by clicking Finger button or by hitting Alt-N hot key.
  33. A Finger dialog opens and you can type your query in form user@host or
  34. host or you can select one of your previous queries by opening the history
  35. drop down list by clicking on the down arrow. Check Full User Info for full
  36. output including plan files if desired. Click dialog Finger button or press
  37. Enter key. Cancel button closes dialog without performing Finger query.

  39. Input in form 'user@host' returns information on specified user,
  40. input 'host' returns list of all currently logged-in users.

  43. Whois Query:

  45. Whois query can be started by clicking Whois button or by hitting Alt-W hot
  46. key. In a Whois dialog enter query string and choose Whois server from list
  47. by clicking on the down array. Click Whois button or press Enter key.
  48. You can Add a new Whois server name by typing it in a Whois server combobox.
  49. It will be saved automatically. You can also delete currently selected server
  50. name by clicking Delete button. Cancel button closes dialog and aborts Whois
  51. database search.

  54. DNS Lookup:

  56. If you know IP address/Internet name of some host you can find out what its
  57. Internet name/IP address is via DNS lookup.
  58. DNS lookup can be started by clicking DNS button or by hitting Alt-D hot key.
  59. In a dialog type in IP address of Internet host name you want to do lookup on
  60. and click Ok button or hit Enter key. Requested information will appear in a
  61. moment. It'll contain Internet host name, alias(es) and IP address. Click Ok
  62. button or press Enter key to close DNS info dialog.

  65. Finger Address Book:
  66.  
  67. You can place your queries to Address Book. It can be opened by clicking
  68. AddBook button or by hitting Alt-A hot key. You can add, delete query entries
  69. or do a finger query of the selected book entry.
  70. Address Book has following commands:
  71.  
  72. New    (Alt-N)  - Add new address to book;
  73. Delete (Alt-D)  - Delete selected address from book;
  74. Finger (Alt-F)  - Do a finger query of selected entry
  75.                   (Double-clicking the item has same effect);
  76. Cancel (Alt-C)  - Exit Address Book without saving changes;
  77. OK     (Alt-K)  - Exit Address Book and save changes.

  79. Add button/command opens the Address Book Entry window, where you can add
  80. a new address. Address Book has a tiny Notepad where to keep information
  81. (user name, tel number etc) on selected address.

  86. You can cancel active query by clicking Cancel button or by hitting Alt-C.

  91. Contents of the window can be cleared up by clicking Clear button or by
  92. hitting Shift-Del hot key.

  100. Save As  - Save results of query to a file. The command is enabled only if
  101. there is text in window.

  103. Print    - Print results of query. The command is enabled only if there is
  104. text in window.

  106. Printer Setup - Choose and setup a printer.

  108. Exit     - Exit the program.

  111. Edit Menu commands:

  113. Copy     - Copy selected text to ClipBoard. The command is enabled only if
  114. there is text selected in window.

  116. Clear    - Clear up window. The command is enabled only if there is text
  117. selected in window.

  119. Select All - Select all text in window. The command is enabled only, if there
  120. is text in window.

  125. Find Text   - Open search dialog. The command is enabled only, if there is text
  126. in window.

  131. History list - If checked list of finger queries is kept (saved).
